Yep, the State of North Carolina deems me safe enough to drive on their roads. So, my first act as a Licensed Driver was going to a bunch of area dealerships. Here’s a lil dump, as I didn’t really take lots of photos.

Kinja'd!!!

Let’s play a game called, “Guess How Much This is Marked Up.”

My personal favorite Mercedes currently on sale.

And my personal least favorite Mercedes currently on sale. I have no problem with the CLA, I think that they’re great, I just don’t like this color scheme at all.

Speaking of ridiculous markups, I decided to look at GT350Rs on Autotrader a few days ago and one was going for almost $65,000 markup. I wanted to go there and be like LOOK ME IN THE FACE AND TELL ME THAT BUYING IT NOW FOR TWICE AS MUCH IS BETTER THAN WAITING THREE MONTHS WHEN YOU GET REKT FOR RAISING PRICES AND BUYING TWO FOR THE REGULAR PRICE.

That markup is disgusting

I thought the $10K markup at my dealer was bad...

With that markup, I hope it sits there until that dealership goes out of business. Fuck those people.

Congratulations!

I didn’t want to tell my drivers test story before, but now I’m going to. I was sixteen and my dad had an olds eighty eight that was no great. It was having some sort of dying issue at the time, but my dad told me, just give it a minute and it’ll start back up but whatever you do don’t push on the gas when you’re trying to restart it.

There was a lady who was notorious for being the hardest drivers test person in my little city where I grew up, and sure as shit, I got her that day.

Well, we’re cruising through some neighborhoods and I nailed the parallel park, and ninety degree back in, and we get to a stop sign and the car dies. I tell her, if we wait a minute it’ll start up. She tells me, if it doesn’t she’s walking back.

I try starting it, and it isn’t firing and she says, try once more but push the gas. I told her, my dad says don’t hit the gas but with enough time it will start. She tells me to try again, and as I do, she sticks her foot into the drivers side and pushes the gas. It doesn’t start, I tell her off. She gets out and starts walking away. I get out and slam the door and say, “shit!” Loud but not yelling. I go back to get my mom who is waiting, we get back to the car and it starts up.

I was banned from the drivers test facility for my anger, both in telling her off for pressing the gas, slamming the door and saying “shit.”

I took it two weeks later and passed no problem. I talked ill of that lady for years. So rejoice in not taking the test in a crappy olds eighty eight that spontaneously dies!

When I took my driver’s test, they retested 10% of the class to make sure the teacher didn’t spent the entire class downing cheap whiskey and burping with his feet on the desk (he didn’t, but did insist on demonstrating everything with a $15 RC Mustang and beginning every sentence with ‘You know, a buddy of mine...” ). We took our actual tests at the end of Driver’s Ed before the six-month period where you have to drive 50 hours instead, which was nice.

DMV day came, and apparently while I was standing to get the photo taken the DMV lady told my mom that I wasn’t one of the people to get retested. This was great, because I had been sweating it for months, considering I have pretty nasty social anxiety and sitting in a car with a cop for an hour driving around in my dad’s Mercury Tracer trying not to screw up did not sound like a fun time. However, she did not tell me.

I instead spent the entire time being incredibly nervous and awkward, even more so when we forgot my birth certificate and had to drive twenty miles back to the house as fast as we could before someone else showed up and took our spot.

Boy, I love the DMV now!

I did mine in a TrailBlazer that doesn’t die, but might at any second. Thankfully, the DMV was swamped with people and they only made me stop at like stop signs and do a three point turn.

I want to shut down every dealer that charges markups over $5,000.

Largest indoor Ford dealership in the US by square footage. I think they’ll be afloat for a while.

That pisses me off even more. That’s why they can afford to have that Mustang sit there until the right idiot comes along.

Someone who writes here ordered a nice Mustang, papers showed the sticker price, then they pulled that dealer markup shit when he went to pick up the car, if I remember correctly. Wonder what happened?

I don’t think they’ll sell it for $109,000. This dealer does a lot of haggling, and can justify $6,000 of a Taurus because their inventory is massive. So I see this GT350 R selling for ~$85,000.

That’s still ridiculous - let me order a car, I’ll pay you sticker, and you make money.

Like most corporations, this dealership is in the business of maxing the absolute most money as possible. And as unethical as it sounds, $42,000 in markups does mean profit. Shame on the dealer for even thinking about charging this much, but they’ll do $12,000 an F150 all day.

There is such a thing as floorplanning, which means a dealership borrows the money to buy the car and keep it on the floor. I can’t imagine they profit from waiting for an idiot to come in as opposed to selling the car for a fair price and getting it off the lot. But then again, I’m not a rich dealership owner.
